The marriage of Icarus's parents brokered peace for their long-warring city-states, but the union itself was hardly peaceful. And both of them, easily manipulated, had a son who was much the same. His birth was auspicious by design. Advisors and aristocrats who stood to gain took pains to craft a prophecy that would herald him as a savior of the realm -- a harbinger of prosperity, though whether by peace or by conquest was left unclear.

So, Icarus came up in chaos. Raised both diplomat and warrior -- serving every purpose but child. Far too soon, responsibility fell in his lap while his parents busied themselves with parties and tournaments, and though those advisors and aristocrats were there to pick up the slack, Icarus grew miserable.

He did not apply for Strixhaven, but rather Strixhaven sent word to him. An adventure. Freedom. Without a second thought -- Icarus was not one for thinking more than once -- he fled with a friend, leaving Theros, his city, and the prophecy behind.

There is no mistaking Iggy's otherworldly lineage. He seems to shimmer in the light, flecks of gold like freckles speckle his skin, body free of scars and blemishes in spite of years of harsh training. And yet, though ethereal, there is something decidedly down-to-earth about him -- a terrible dresser with wild, unbrushed hair, utterly approachable.

Icarus's magic is a subtle thing, passed by touch most often -- a strengthening of metal (and mettle), a blessing of light. His armor and weapons always appear perfectly polished, and one wouldn't be faulted for missing the magical effects entirely. It manifests in a faint gilding -- the glint of gold or polished bronze catching the light, fading in a moment. Even his preternatural ability to calculate the trajectory of a spear or arrow, the exact force needed to slice through skin and bone, manifests at best with the wild fluttering of a few errant golden feathers, seemingly born of the force of his body tearing through air.

⚔️ While Icarus's birth was technically prophesized in a realm where belief can give way to true power, it was wholly manufactured by politicians and an aristocracy hellbent on retaining power. For all intents and purposes, it is a false prophecy.

⚔️ The prophecy is a pretty bog standard Great Liberator/Leader Of Men deal, though it's ambiguous enough that there's a lot of debate in Theros over whether he is to be a peacemaker or a warlord.

⚔️ That said, it's pretty obvious his handlers were intending to use him as an implement of war. Though he received a fine education, they were much more interested in making a soldier of him, and his talents reflect that.

⚔️ He straight up said "Actually, fuck this." and kind of left his home in chaos.
